The centre piece of the whole house water filtration system is one or more Stainless Steel water tanks.

Your rainwater is polished by the Puretec Hybrid Plus filtration systems. In addition to killing 99.99% of bacteria with UV rays, it filters out chemicals as well as sediment and anything else that manages to pass through the pre-tank water quality devices. This not only makes your water taste and smell great, but also prolongs the life of your household appliances.

We have a range of water pumps to suit your needs from just watering the garden to the whole of house usage.

Water Tank Outlet Fittings

Each tank could be fitted with a 25mm outlet and ball valve at the base, or a 50mm high suction outlet with a ball valve for balance line connection, and a 90mm or a 100mm mosquito proof overflow. Find out more about our Water Tank Outlet Fittings.

Rainwater Tank Filter System FAQs

How long does a whole of house water filter last?

How long the filter(s) lasts depends on lots of factors such as how clean the water is when it enters your tank(s) and how much debris has already entered the tank.

You should plan on washing and cleaning your sediment remover (normally uses diatomatious earth) every 6 months and if you have a ultra-violet filter system and/or a carbon filter system, then every 12 months.

Does a whole of house water filter reduce the water pressure?

Normally the pump will maintain a strong pressure and if you have a variable speed pump then it will adjust the pressure to keep it relatively constant.

The sediment remover filter system will reduce the water pressure slightly as it becomes more clogged with impurities while the carbon filter and/or the ultraviolet filter system will have no impact on water pressure at all

Where should a whole of house water filter be installed?

It is usual to place the filter system and the pump near the tank outlet. If you choose to buy a complete filter system and a pump all in the one cabinet- such as the Puretec Hybrid Plus Filtration System then the cabinet can be placed near the tank or near the house/structure or anywhere along the water line from the tank to the house/structure.

Are whole of house water filters safe?

Yes, whole of house water filter systems are very safe because the water is only passing through a washable sediment filter, to filter out any course dirt, sand and particles down to 5 micron. It then passes through a carbon filter which reduces bad taste, odour, herbicides, pesticides, and chemicals.

The 3rd stage filtration filters down to 1 micron. If you are using an ultraviolet filter system, then the water is just passing under the ultra-violet light which kills any bacteria in the water.

Water Tank Outlet Fittings

All Our Stainless Steel Water Tanks Come with Three Standard Inclusions.
Upon ordering your tank(s) you will be asked to place on a diagram where you want the fittings located.

Rainwater Inlet

Rainwater enters the tank through the inlet on the lid of the water tank.

Typically the inlet fits a 400mm diameter strainer (other sizes include 300mm and 500mm). Select Water Tanks supplies a 400mm inlet with strainer and light guard as standard.

The light guard prevents your rainwater from exposure to Ultra Violet light which encourages algae.

Rainwater Inlet fitting

Mosquito-proof overflow

A 90mm or 100mm sized mosquito-proof overflow fitting at the top of the tank wall, directly under the lid.

Each water tank requires an overflow connection point installed at the
top of the wall, directly under the lid. Water tanks with a capacity of 10,000 or less are fitted with a 90mm PVC corrugated overflow body. Larger tanks are fitted with a 100mm overflow body. A mosquito proof gauze is supplied with each overflow.

Water Tank Outlet-Fittings Mosquito Proof Overflow

Ball value

A 25mm outlet fitting together with a tested ball valve which is placed at the bottom of the tank.

Water Tank Outlet-Fittings Ball Value-

Additional Water Tank Fittings

Best practice for larger tanks is to also include a High suction (HS) fitting. This is a 50mm outlet and ball valve installed on the corrugation above. This allows for efficient water balancing when other tanks are connected. The HS Fitting also protects the pumps and internal water appliances as it draws only clean water from above the sludge / anaerobic level.

You may also wish to purchase a Bucket Height Tap for example, where the tap is placed high enough from the base, to allow gravity feed of water, into a bucket placed under the tap.

Water Tank Outlet-Additional Fittings-

Other additional fittings can also be purchased.

  • 50 mm outlet male or female
  • 50 mm outlet with ball valve – High Suction (HS) fitting
  • 50 mm outlet with ball valve and camlock (Fire fighting Qld)
  • 50 mm outlet with ball valve and storz (Fire fighting NSW)
  • Extra 90/100 mm overflow
  • Extra 25 mm female outlet
  • Extra 25 mm outlet with ball valve
  • Extra 400 mm inlet strainer with light guard
  • 450 mm screwed lid (vented)
  • Upgrade 450 mm screwed lid (if replacing 400 mm inlet strainer)
  • 500 mm Inlet strainer with light guard
  • 650 mm screwed lid
  • 150 mm overflow
  • 25 mm bucket height Tap

Rainwater Tank Pumps FAQs

Do rainwater tanks need a pump?

No not all rainwater tanks need a pump. One way to get water from the tank is by relying on gravity.

The tank can be placed on a stand or on high ground and gravity will force the water down to where you want it. If you need the water to travel up hill from the tank or you need the water to be at a certain pressure when coming from the tank, then you will need a pump.

How do water tanks pumps work?

Electric water pumps usually have small AC / DC motors. This motor is contained in a sealed case, and rotates the impeller (or moves the piston / diaphragm via a simple gear drive.)

Through a series of pushes, the rotor continues to spin, driving the impeller [or piston / diaphragm] and powering the pump so that the water is forced through to the outlet tap or system with good pressure.
